Ehlanzeni TVET College’s senior manager of corporate services rises above challenges

Akhona Masoyi said she wants to use the experience and knowledge she acquired as tools to make a difference.

The senior manager of corporate services of Ehlanzeni TVET College, Akhona Mayosi, did not let background define her future.

She lost her parents at a young age. She describes her loss as a life-changing situation that ignited in her a spirit of hard work.

She boasts 18 years of experience in HR and business process mapping, and two years in business development.
Mayosi said she has dreams to help less fortunate children to achieve their dreams, just like she was supported when she needed it the most.

“I have a national diploma in commercial practice, a BTech in management, an advance certificate in managing the employment process, a masters in business administration, a VIP payroll diploma, and a director’s qualification at NQF level 8, and currently I’m a PhD candidate. I want to be there for those young people who lost their parents, and I want them to be able to tell a story about how they overcame everything. I believe I made it to where I am because of the support I got, and I can do the same for others.”

She said she wants to use the experience and knowledge she acquired as a tool to make a difference in her workplace and in the community.

“I have experience in human resources, organisational development, training, development and diversity, and I believe in inclusiveness in the workplace. Due to my experience I have been invited to be a keynote speaker during graduations at institutions of higher learning and at women’s conferences. In my presentations I encourage young people to not let their surroundings limit them, and I share the techniques that I used to stay focused in my schoolwork.”

She joined the local college last year and said in the past months she has grown from strength to strength.

“I grew up in the Eastern Cape, Transkei, in Butterworth. I lost my parents at a young age and few years after that, I lost my two siblings. These life-changing circumstances affected me a lot. As a way to cope, I went through both professional and spiritual counselling. There was a time when I was too overwhelmed by the changes and losing loved ones. I persevered and I embraced my difficult path. I thank God for my mother’s cousins, Veronica Jubisa and Kholeka Makhwezela, my mother’s two friends, Phindiwe Tshevu and Nonceba Grace Sanda, and my paternal family for the role they played in my life and in my siblings’ lives.”

Her future plans include adopting a child and fostering orphans.
