Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation assists various sporting codes

New soccer kits, netball kit and cycling jerseys with 16 helmets were donated in an effort to support local sports

Much-needed sport attire was handed over to clubs in various sporting codes, such as soccer, cycling and netball last Friday.
The Love and Peace Gogos and Halfway Gogos football clubs received new soccer kits, while the Tekwane and KaNyamazane netball clubs also did. The Ematsafeni Cycling Club received jerseys donated by the Mpumalanga Cycling Union, and 16 riding helmets.

This was a way for the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation (DCSR) and the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) to work diligently to produce results and to make good on their promise.
At last month’s ministerial and sectorial imbizo, spearheaded by DSAC in Tekwane South on September 23, the local clubs, including the gogos, pleaded for assistance with sport kits.

Minister Nathi Mthethwa of the DSAC promised they would receive their kits within a month.

During the handover, MEC Thandi Shongwe said they are responding to the calls to support locals in sports, and to deliver on short-term goals as they plan how to deal with long-term ones.
“We are here to fulfil our promises we made three weeks ago that it will take less than a month for the teams to get their sport attire. This is our way of taking action and putting our people first in an effort to slowly tackle all sports- and culture-related issues. Long-term goals like the sports field are things that require proper planning and researching vacant lands on which to build, and takes time.”

Shongwe said they fully support elders who play soccer, as it is good for their health.
“We will come to watch the elders play in their new soccer kits, and we hope this will motivate the youth to also participate in sports.”
