Department of agriculture conducts an oversight visit to Nkomazi

The purpose of the visit was to ensure that landfill sites adhere to the rules and regulations of the National Environmental Waste Act.

The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (Dardlea) visited RCL Foods, Komati Mill and Malelane Mill landfill sites for a permit licence review meeting in Nkomazi on Friday April 28.

According to Dardlea, various stakeholders including pollution waste management, environmental compliance, enforcement directorates and the Nkomazi Local Municipality participated.

The aim of the visit was to review old waste management licences by ensuring that big companies located in the Nkomazi Local Municipality are still in line with the rules and regulations of the National Environmental Management Waste Act.

“Part of the visit was to examine compliance with the disposal of waste after the production process, and the usage of the landfill. Air pollution was discussed, including the possibility of installing air quality monitoring systems to help protect the environment and human health against air pollution,” said Dardlea’s spokesperson, Zanele Shabangu.
