TS Galaxy clash with Sundowns in Carling Knockout Cup at Mbombela Stadium

TS Galaxy are ready to battle Mamelodi Sundowns on home turf, however, the boys in yellow are determined to be the first to lift the cup.

TS Galaxy will have a mountain to climb when they host the DStv Premiership defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns in the inaugural Carling Knockout Cup at Mbombela Stadium tonight, Wednesday October 18. Kick-off is at 19:30.

The Carling Knockout Cup was launched by the Premier Soccer League and sponsors Carling Black Label last year.
This PSL competition replaced the Telkom Knockout Cup which had last been hosted in 2019.

The official draw of this new tourney was conducted on October 10 and Mpumalanga’s lone Premiership side, TS Galaxy, was pitted against the Tshwane giants, Mamelodi Sundowns.

This iconic stadium has proven to be Galaxy’s beast-slaying territory.

Kaizer Chiefs were the recent victims as they suffered a 1-0 defeat here in the beginning of the current DStv Premiership season.
Galaxy will, however, come to this clash knowing full well of the threat and wrath of the Mamelodi Sundowns, who have been consistent over the past few seasons.

The Sundowns were, however, outsmarted by Orlando Pirates in the MTN 8 final recently and this could make them even more deadly and merciless than ever before.

As history-makers, Sundowns are eyeing to have their name written on the trophy and have the bragging rights as the first team to lift it.
This is, however, not going to be an easy ride for them as they will be without some of their key players due to injuries.

They also have much on their plate as they have to juggle their schedule around to accommodate their continental fixtures.

The Carling Knockout Cup will be played in the same format as the Telkom Knockout, with the last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final to determine the champs.

The Mbombela Stadium spokesperson, Mthuthuzeli Zondo, said tickets are available at Ticket Pro, SPAR, CNA, Edgars and Choppies outlets.

“This is a big game and we are anticipating a good turnout. We are doing everything to ensure that traffic flows smoothly. Gates will be opened at 16:30 and there will be free parking for early birds, so we would like to encourage the public to arrive early,” said Zondo.
