Sidlamafa Secondary School learners sent home after department fails to deliver mobile classrooms
Grade 9 learners of Sidlamafa Secondary School in KaMhlushwa do not have classrooms and had to be sent home until further notice.
Learners from Sidlamafa Secondary School in KaMhlushwa were sent home this morning after the Department of Education (DoE) failed to deliver mobile classes to the school late last year. The mobile classes were supposed to be used by 300 grade 9 learners.
According to the school governing body’s chairperson, Patric Hadebe, they have had to send the learners home after realising that the DoE failed to keep their promise.

“After the DoE promised to build us a new school, most of the classes were demolished. Only four were left for the Grade 9s. It was around November last year when the department promised that they would demolish the remaining four classes and erect four mobile classes for the learners to use in the interim. The contractor was here late last year to keep their end of the deal. The department has let us down and 300 learners are now stranded,” said Hadebe.
He said that in this case, an injury to one is an injury to all. “We will not have our children and teachers conduct the teaching and learning activities under the trees. We have long passed those times. We need the department to bring those mobile classes as soon as possible so we can commence with our academic year. We had planned to hit the ground running, but we are unable to do that now. The children will stay home until those four classes are delivered as per the agreement with the department.”
