Four vehicles set alight in Calcutta

Six vehicles have been torched in separate incidents in the Calcutta area in January, the most recent incident having occurred on January 24.

Four vehicles were set on fire while parked in the yard of someone’s home in Oakley, Calcutta, in the early hours of Wednesday January 24. This brings the number of vehicles set alight in the Calcutta area in January this year to six.

A provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the most recent torching of vehicles occurred just after midnight while the owner was asleep in his house. The vehicles included a minibus taxi, a light delivery vehicle and two sedans.

Mdhluli said the owner had woken up when he heard a loud bang outside his home. He looked outside and saw the four vehicles burning. The owner claims he also heard some gunshots next to the main gate of his house.

“The police were eventually alerted about the incident and upon arrival, found some empty cartridges for a rifle at the scene,” said Mdhluli.
In the two previous incidents, two minibus taxis were set alight, also in Calcutta. The first torching occurred on January 6 and the second on January 17.
