IN PHOTOS: 4-in-1 marathon runners take on Jock of the Bushveld in Mbombela

According to the hosting club, the City of Mbombela Marathon Club, the event contributed to Mbombela's economy with its visiting participants.

The Run City of Mbombela Jock of the Bushveld 4-in-1 Marathon saw large groups of locals and professional marathoners tackle various lengths from Barberton to Hoërskool Bergvlam on Saturday February 10.

The annual marathon, hosted by the City of Mbombela Marathon Club, attracted over 600 runners in the four races – 42.2km, 21km, 10km and 4.9km.

Jackson Ole Koisenge took the gold medal for the male category of the 42.2km with a time of 02:26:10, while Gladys Cheruiyot claimed victory in the female category with 03:06:06.

In a quite competitive 21km race, Abednico Mashaba took victory, hitting 01:10:23, tailed by Sibonginkosi Maseko at 01:10:27 and Sipho Mamba at 01:10:45. Rosaline Isaiah claimed the number one spot for the ladies with a time of 01:28:54. Faith Kiptoo came second in a time of 01:29:10, followed by Thobile Ngwenyama at 01:40:57.

It was a proud moment for Zanele Sehohle as the victor in the ladies’ 10km race with a time of 00:35:40. She was followed by Nomvula Sithole at 00:38:06 in second place and Reneilwe Dibakwane at 00:41:30 in third.

Tebogo Pulusa took the number one spot in the men’s 10km with 00:29:19, followed by Prince Ndlovu at 00:29:32 and Tshiamo Lephoto at 00:29:37.

 

The 4.9km was enjoyed mostly by families, friends and pets as a fun walk. Three young runners, PJ Ntimane, Wandile Nkosi and Kgotso Ntini, gave it their all.

The chairperson of the City of Mbombela Marathon Club, TV Mkhabela, said the event was yet another success as it also boosted the town’s economy by attracting visiting participants. “We appreciate the runners for honouring the marathon. The aim was to also create awareness against crime that affects businesses, tourists and residents,” he said.

The marathon was a qualifier for the Two Oceans and the Comrades.
