Nkomazi man receives 25 years’ imprisonment for rape of a girl

The Boschfontein Regional Court sentenced the offender. He was also declared unfit to work with children.

A 32-year-old man was recently found guilty of raping a girl and was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment by the Boschfontein Regional Court.

According to the Mpumalanga spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Monica Nyuswa, the girl’s mother and the offender had worked together at a sugar cane plantation in Nkomazi.

“In February 2021, the victim was on her way to her mother’s work, when she came across the man, who dragged her to the sugar cane plantation and raped her. When walking back home, the victim met her brother and told him about the incident. The mother was also informed.”

Nyuswa said the victim was taken to the Tonga Thuthuzela Care Centre for treatment and psychosocial support. She said the man pleaded not guilty to the charge at first, but the state prosecutor, Joshua Sibeko, led evidence of the victim, the first report and the mother.

“The accused was positively linked through DNA and was found guilty as charged.”

The court took into consideration the offender’s home circumstances and deviated from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment, making him eligible for parole sooner than would have otherwise been the case.

Nyuswa said the offender was also declared unfit to work with children, and the court ordered his name to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
