The Department of Health’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said, “The department is acknowledging the fact that the society members consult with THPs first. Hence it felt it necessary to empower them with knowledge and skills necessary to screen non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension”.

Malamule said traditional health practitioners are and have been an important part of our society for ages. “Their knowledge in providing healthcare in society through African traditional medicine is not taken for granted. The plan is to expand the programme through the entire province.”
