Mpumalanga IEC says public can still apply for Section 24A before closing date
Section 24A applications can be done online and at the IEC City of Mbombela's offices.

As the country prepares for the general elections, the Mpumalanga Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged those who want to apply for Section 24A to do so before the closing date.
According to www.elections.org.za, voters may vote outside the voting district where they were registered on voting day, May 29, but need to notify the IEC before voting day during the period specified in the election timetable. That period is March 15 to May 17, 2024.
The provincial IEC’s communication and stakeholder liaison, Thanduxolo Chembeni, said people in Mpumalanga who cannot visit the voting stations in the area in which they were registered, can apply for Section 24A.

According to him, people sometimes confuse Section 24A with special votes, and he emphasised they are two different things. A special vote allows a registered voter who can’t vote at their voting station on election day to apply to vote on a predetermined day before election day.
Chembeni said the application date for special votes had already closed on Friday May 3, and that only Section 24A applications are still opened to the public.
“Those who will apply for Section 24A need to say exactly where they will be voting instead of their registered area. The public needs to know that the applications cannot be done on voting day.
If it happens that you apply for Section 24A, but your plans change and you are back in the area in which your registered station is, you need not worry about applying again. You can just go there, because your details are already there,” he explained.

“Those who want to apply for Section 24A can do so online on www.elections.org.za. The online application closes at 23:59 on May 17. Those who prefer to visit the local offices, can do so. The IEC City of Mbombela’s offices are at 25 Roodt Street, and close at 17:00. You will need your ID, be above the age of 18 and already have registered to vote,” said Chembeni.
He said the provincial offices would like to urge locals to collect their IDs or apply for new ones if they misplaced theirs.
“The home affairs offices are opened on weekends, too, to accommodate the public, and will also be open on voting day.” Chembeni said the IEC will launch its results operation centre on Friday May 24.
