Mpumalanga learners excel in national debate competition
The MEC for community safety, Jackie Macie, held a special luncheon at Nutting House Lodge on October 3 to celebrate the learners' participation in the National Road Safety Debate and Participatory Education Techniques competitions.
The learners who participated in the National Road Safety Debate and Participatory Education Techniques competitions were celebrated with a special luncheon at Nutting House Lodge on Thursday, October 3.
The competitions were held in Mangaung in the Free State. Mpumalanga won second and third places in the urban category, as well as the best overall speakers in both urban and rural categories.

The 16 learners and the four trainees were awarded R1 000 each. Furthermore, the department gifted a laptop to each of the two best speakers.

These prizes were in addition to the ones they had received during the regional and provincial legs of the competition.

The MEC for community safety, Jackie Macie, reminded the learners that talent without character was not helpful, citing that good character would take them far in life. He also mentioned road safety as a serious health issue in the world.

“But one that rarely receives the attention it deserves. Every year, an estimated 1.25 million people are killed on the world’s roads, and up to 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. This makes road traffic collisions the ninth leading cause of death across all ages globally and the main cause of death among those aged between 15 and 29 years,” said Macie.
The sponsors also congratulated the teams and their trainers.
