Nkomazi teacher proves to be a maths genius in the country

Sithembiso Eugene Mahlalela was recently nationally recognised for excelling in teaching mathematics to senior grades.

A teacher of Mjokwane Secondary School in KaMaqhekeza, Sithembiso Eugene Mahlalela, bagged an accolade for excellence in teaching mathematics.

He received his award at the National Teaching Awards in the presence of the South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa, at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday, October 5.

Mahlalela had been recognised in the provincial instalment of these awards to qualify for the national awards.

He said he is passionate about mathematics and hopes to achieve more. “Maths is my life and I am really excited about this recognition, especially nationally. My dream is to not only be recognised for my work and collect accolades, but to grow in the education sector and become more than a teacher.”

Mahlalela teaches maths to the grades 10, 11 and 12. He said he uses the little he has to give the learners of Mjokwane Secondary School an education they deserve.

“To know mathematics does not necessarily mean you can deliver the subject to learners. It is all about making them understand its concept, be on their level and learn the subject together so they are able to excel in their respective grades. There is a lack of teaching and learning resources at the school, but through the love of teaching, myself and all the teachers there are using every resource sufficiently to help each learner achieve the best results.”
