21 learners in Nkangala released from hospital following suspected food poisoning

The Mpumalanga Department of Education said in a statement that the learners, who are suspected to have had food poisoning, have been released from the hospital.

On Wednesday, October 16, the Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) reported that it had received information that 21 learners of Marhagi Secondary School in Verena, Nkangala District were rushed to the local clinic.

According to the DoE’s spokesperson, Gerald Sambo, this comes after they complained of having stomach cramps and headaches.

He said the clinic later referred all the learners to KwaMhlanga Hospital for observation. It is alleged that the learners ate atchar they had bought from vendors outside their school, and it was suspected that they had food poisoning.

Sambo said all the learners had been discharged from hospital later the same day.
This publication sent some follow up enquiries to the department, but had not received a response by the time of publishing.
