University of Mpumalanga hosts three-day hackathon

Tshwane University of Technology and Nedbank partnered with the University of Mpumalanga to host this event, which aimed to motivate students to think in innovative ways that will benefit the communities around them.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP), in partnership with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Nedbank, hosted a three-day hackathon from Friday to Sunday, October 25 to 27.

The hackathon encourages university students to develop AI-based solutions addressing real-world challenges in agriculture, waste management, tourism and education. The event featured 10 teams, which comprised students from both institutions in different disciplines and levels, competing to deliver innovative solutions.

During this event, three teams were awarded for their innovative projects.

In first place was Agri-Smart Solutions, who developed Farm Guard, an AI-driven tool that helps farmers detect and manage pests and diseases effectively. This solution empowers farmers to protect their crops, increase productivity and reduce costs through data-driven insights.

In second place was Smart Crops Solutions, who created an AI-based market prediction system that provides farmers with accurate crop price forecasts, enabling them to make informed decisions and maximise profitability.

In third place was Meraki, who developed a scholar system, a comprehensive platform designed to address educational challenges and enhance user engagement in learning.
