UPDATE: Accident victim not identified yet
The victim was the driver of a Citi Golf, not a VW Polo as reported before.
Although the accident scene has been cleared, the identity of the driver of the Citi Golf, which collided head-on with a light delivery van (LDV), has not been established yet and family members have not been informed. Lowvelder wishes to clarify that the person who died was driving a Citi Golf and not a VW Polo, as reported previously.

After the head-on collision between the LDV and the Citi Golf, a VW Polo crashed into the back of the Citi Golf. The driver of the LDV fled the accident scene and his current whereabouts are unknown.
Nine people were injured in the crash, including a six-month-old child. All were rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital and Mediclinic Nelspruit by different emergency vehicles. The details surrounding the accident are not clear and will be reported on as soon as information has been received.
One dead and nine injured in Mbombela accident
One died and nine people sustained serious injuries, including a six-month-old baby, in an accident that occurred on the R40 near Church Unlimited in Mbombela this morning, November 11.
One lane towards Mbombela is currently closed and a stop-and-go is in place. According to Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med, they received a call-out at about 08:25. They found an LDV that had collided head-on with VW Polo, and another vehicle had crashed into the back of the Polo.

“The Polo driver was declared dead on the scene, while the other patients were transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital and Mediclinic Nelspruit by different emergency vehicles for further medical care. The cause of the accident is currently unknown at this stage,” he said.
He added that the police and other emergency personnel are on the scene, however, it is still going to take time for the road to be reopened. Motorists are advised to drive with caution when approaching the area or use alternative routes to avoid delays.
