No more swipe payments at the N4 toll gates from December 1 – here’s what you need to know

The following options will apply from December 1 when travelling on the N4, according to TRACN4.

The festive season is upon us and one and all are planning to rejuvenate for 2025.

Families and friends from Mpumalanga will embark on destinations using the N4.

Take note that TracN4 is phasing out magstripe card payments as of Sunday, December 1.

According to TRACN4, toll plazas on the N4 will no longer accept magstripe (swipe) card payments.

They advise motorists of the following when using the N4 toll route:

To pay tolls, please use one of the following options:

• Contactless-enabled debit/credit cards (EMV) – EMV stands for Europay, Visa, and Mastercard, which are the credit card companies that spearheaded the development and widespread adoption of this chip technology. In lay terms, ‘tap and pay’.

• Smart devices (smartphones, smartwatches) linked to contactless payment apps (eg: Apple Pay, Samsung Pay)

• TRAC tags for fast, convenient toll access.

Or

• Cash
