Nkomazi’s first economic indaba proves fruitful
The aim of the indaba was to bring together role players to embark on plans to make Nkomazi an economic and tourism hub.
“Fostering sustainable economic growth in rural areas has never been more vital.”
These were the words of Nkomazi Local Municipality’s (NLM) mayor, Phindile Magagula, during the inaugural economic growth indaba hosted by the municipality’s Department of Tourism and Economic Development in the Block C community hall on October 24.
The indaba attracted key industry role players who gave stellar presentations and expert advice to local business owners.
Magagula said this was to ensure that local economic development activities are advanced as a solution for sustainable poverty alleviation and creating a developed nation. “For a rural municipality such as ours, economic growth means keeping our families together and creating a bright future for our children. To ensure economic growth, we can create job opportunities right here by promoting agriculture and supporting local businesses. This will also bring with it the opportunity to improve critical infrastructure such as roads, schools and healthcare,” said Magagula.

Tourism is one of the major contributing factors in Nkomazi’s economy. The co-founder and director of the Graskop Gorge Lift Co, Oupa Pilane, encouraged local business people to take advantage of Nkomazi’s geographical placement. “Being strategically placed between Mozambique and eSwatini is one of the most advantageous things Nkomazi can boast about. The people who come into the country for whatever reason would have to buy water or something to eat, and that on its own is business for the locals. There are so many opportunities that just need people to come together and make it work and support one another,” said Pilane.

He also indicated some of the possible upcoming plans for tourism in the area. “There are a number of tourism nodes in the area that have development potential, but may require further investments. These nodes are found all over the NLM’s boundaries, including the rural south, the Kruger’s Malelane Gate, Leopard Creek Country Club, Lala Palm Country Club and Golf Course and Pestana Kruger Lodge. Marloth Park and the N4 Corridor also attract several tourism establishments that benefit from the high traffic volumes between South Africa and Mozambique,” he added.
The indaba was also attended by businesses such as Pestana Kruger Lodge, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Apex Investment Holdings.
