Lowveld Walkers host crazy socks walk for mental health in Rocky Drift

The distances for the Crazy Socks for Health Professionals Awareness ranged from 5km to 21km.

The Lowveld Walkers hosted their annual Crazy Socks for Health Professionals Awareness walk on Saturday, November 16, to recognise and appreciate the importance of healthcare professionals.

The distances ranged from 5km to 21km and kicked off at Engen Flamboyant Garage in Rocky Drift.

According to Lowveld Walkers’ founder, Joseph Mashaba, the event was aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding the mental health challenges with which these professionals struggle.

“Crazy Socks for Health Professionals aims to normalise and create a safe space for them to have conversations about mental well-being.”

The participants were encouraged to wear crazy socks. “We use the socks as a conversation starter to help increase mental health awareness. The more colourful and crazier the socks, the better and louder the message,” said Mashaba.

He said the turnout was by far the best compared with the previous two events.

“I did not expect such an amazing turnout. We had more than 300 participants. The young and old people at the event all rocked their crazy socks, and what caught my eye is how most of them mismatched the socks, which was also part of the theme. The people were excited and I was impressed by their energy and excitement,” said Mashaba.
