For now, only one camera is active on the southbound lanes towards Mbombela, since it was concluded that most of the accidents occurred in those lanes.

The ongoing torrential rains across most parts of the province require all motorists to be highly cautious to avoid disasters.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, it is important that where visibility is reduced due to rain or misty conditions, speed is reduced and prudent following distance between the vehicles must be strictly adhered to.

“Motorists must be mindful as embedded potholes may not be visible when it is raining, hence they are advised to switch their lights on. They should also avoid crossing overflowing bridges,” Mmusi said.

As schools are reopening for the first term of the new year and many others return to work next week, those who will be travelling this coming weekend, are encouraged to obey the rules and always prioritise their safety and that of other road users.

“They should observe applicable speed limits; adjust their driving in line with prevailing conditions on the road. Ensure roadworthiness of their vehicles, do not overload, do not drink while driving, and use the road with due consideration to other road users. Motorists are further called to travel during daylight whenver possible and those travelling long distances, should rest sufficiently along their journeys,” Mmusi said.

He added that traffic law enforcement will remain on high alert even this coming weekend to enforce the law and deal with any errant driver behaviour.
