One dead in Mozambican taxi and vehicle collision on the N4
The collision happened between Rivulets and the Sudwala turn-off just before 06:00 this morning, January 9.
The driver of a Volkswagen Polo was declared dead after he collided with a minibus taxi that was towing a heavily loaded trailer on the N4 between Rivulets and the Sudwala turn-off shortly before 06:00 this morning, January 9.
A mother and a young child who were passengers in the Polo were treated and transported by ambulance to the nearest medical facility.
The eastbound lane was completely obstructed and the westbound one slightly.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said the heavily loaded trailer might have been the cause of the accident.
Preliminary investigations have suggested that the trailer might have pushed the taxi down a steep descent, which then caused the driver to lose control of it,” said Mmusi.
He said the taxi then collided with the Polo. “The driver of the light motor vehicle was declared dead on the scene, the mother was seriously injured and she and her child were rushed to hospital,” said Mmusi.
He said the taxi was a Mozambican one and was believed to have been travelling back to Mozambique.

“We continue to ask motorists to always reduce speed and avoid overloading, as these are some of the main causes of road fatalities,” said Mmusi.
He said the department’s accident experts were conducting further investigations.
