Matsafeni and Pienaar schools welcome 2025 Grade Ones
The first day of Grade One is one of the most celebrated days in a learner’s school journey and these kids looked happy to be starting their journey in ‘big school’.
The first day of the 2025 school year was an exciting one at John Mdluli Primary School and Ndlaphu Primary School on January 15. The learners looked happy to be learning, playing and making new friends.
According to a Grade One teacher, Lindiwe Phiri of John Mdluli Primary School, the learners are excited to be start their ‘big school’ adventures. “Looking at the learners’ attitudes were when they entered the class, I can see that compared with last year these kids were ready for school. In my class only one learner cried, unlike last year, when many more cried when their parents left.”

Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga Department of Education said it warmly welcomed all learners who reported to schools for their first day. The MEC for education, Cathy Dlamini, extended her best wishes to the Grade Ones and committed to working closely with stakeholders to create an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning.
“Let’s work together this year to nurture the potential within each child. Every learner’s success is a shared victory, and together, we will pave the way for a brighter future.”

Dlamini said the department is actively addressing all outstanding admission cases and has established dedicated committees to expedite the process.
“The department’s priority is ensuring that all learners are in classrooms, actively engaged in their education. In this regard, the department seeks the co-operation of parents. All schools have received learner stationery, and its distribution to learners is expected to proceed without challenges,” she explained.
