The grade ones were excited to start this new chapter.

The first day of the 2025 school year, Wednesday, January 15, was an exciting one at John Mdluli Primary School in Matsafeni and Ndlaphu Primary School in Pienaar.

The learners looked happy to be learning, playing and making new friends.

According to a Grade One teacher, Lindiwe Phiri of John Mdluli, the learners were excited to start their ‘big school’ adventures. “Looking at their attitudes when they entered the class, I can see that compared with last year, these kids are ready for school. In my class, only one learner cried when their parents left, unlike last year, when many more did.”

Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga Department of Education said it warmly welcomed all
the learners who reported to school on their first day.

The MEC for education, Cathy Dlamini, extended her best wishes to the Grade Ones. “Let’s work together this year to nurture the potential within each child. Every learner’s success is a shared victory, and together, we will pave the way for a brighter future.”

Dlamini said the department is actively addressing all outstanding admission cases and has established dedicated committees to expedite the process. “The department’s priority is to ensure that all learners are in classrooms, actively engaging in their education. In this regard, the department seeks the parents’ co-operation. All schools have received stationery, and the distribution of that to the learners is expected to proceed without challenges,” she said.
