DJ Sphe loves, lives and breathes deep house music
DJ Sphe has managed to build a name for herself around Nsikazi, playing a music genre enjoyed mostly by millennials.
“Mculo wema grootman”, or music for matured people, is what Siphesihle Msweli, stage name DJ Sphe, is all about.
Her sets are adored by deep house music lovers who are mostly of the advanced generations.
“I play deep and Afrohouse music, and the new craze, the ‘3 step’ music genre that is taking over the music scene. But more than anything, I just love beautiful and mature music. I play healing music, especially deep house. This genre dates back as far the 1980s – it is the father of all the groovy genres we have in South Africa,” Msweli said.
She said she fell in love with DJing in 2023, started practising in January and secured her first gig at a lifestyle lounge and bar in Likazi by April. “How did I manage that in such a short space of time? I have no idea, but I surround myself with influential people who could help me put myself out there. These are the same people who helped to be a DJ. I also managed to claim residency at the same entertainment establishment. I like that fact that I surprise people every time I play, because they think I will play amapiano or whatever, but then I do house music. I get a lot of compliments,” she said.

Msweli said she is inspired by DJ Silly S, DJ Sirelo, Black Coffee and Shimza, and now has broadened her love of music based on producers such as Chronical Deep, Oddxperience, Deep Essentials and Poizen.
She her future goals include producing her own music and growing as a brand that celebrates deep house music, but for she now focuses on getting gigs and making grooves around the province.
