Police arrest three suspects for possession of explosives, and another three for contravening the Immigration Act, near Barberton

In two separate incidents during Operation Vala Umgodi on Monday, February 10, police arrested three suspects for possession of explosives and another three for contravening the Immigration Act.

According to a police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the first three suspects were arrested during a routine check.
“The astute members stopped and searched a maroon vehicle with three occupants on the R38. Upon searching the vehicle, they recovered some explosives – four Superpower 90 blasting cartridges, capped fuse, and 9m of detonating cord, suspected to be used in the commission of illegal mining activities.”

Ndubane said two of the arrested suspects are foreign nationals. The three were charged with possession of prohibited explosives, and their vehicle was seized.
She added that as the police continued with their duties, they came across the other three suspects who failed to produce proper documents for being in the country.
“These suspects were apprehended and detained. They are also expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court today, Wednesday, February 12,” she said.
