16-year-old girl raped in Acornhoek by alleged serial rapist, suspect arrested

The victim was on her way to school for extra lessons when she was attacked and raped. The investigation is ongoing.

A 19-year-old was arrested on Monday, March 17, for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl who was on her way to school in Acornhoek for extra lessons.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the incident occurred on Sunday, March 16. The suspect is expected to appear in Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court today, March 19.

“The young girl was coming from church heading to a nearby school for extra lessons. She came across the suspect who allegedly threatened her with a knife before raping her. He fled the scene afterwards.

“The matter was reported to the police and a rape case was opened. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit was assigned to investigate the case,” he said.

Mdhluli said the police had sought help from the community.

“They came on board and assisted with information that led to the suspect’s arrest. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect could have been involved in other similar rape cases.

“As the investigation is still ongoing, more charges might be added against the suspect,” he said.
