Young Ehlanzeni athletes win medals at national champs

The U10 athletes performed well in Germiston.

Pupils of various schools in the province recently showed great sportsmanship and dedication at the National Primary School Athletics championship. These young athletes travelled to Germiston for the two-day meet from March 21 to 22.

The Mpumalanga U10 team came back home with two gold medals, three silver and a bronze, while the U11, U12 and U13 teams only made it to the semi-final round on March 21.

The two U10s, Scallet Msithini and Leam Plath of Laerskool Barberton, secured four medals with Scallet winning the 100m event and taking second place in the 80m. Leam also earned a bronze medal in the 80m and a silver in the long jump.

More U10s who excelled are Lethiwe Themba of Hazyview Primary School who received a gold medal in high jump, and Bernice Silinda of Laerskool Malelane who received a gold medal in shot put. Notably, Nonhlekazi Masango, a pupil of Umlilo Primary School in KaBokweni, stood out among the U12 team participants by reaching the semi-finals in the 100m and 100m relay.

A teacher and sports coach of Umlilo, Phumlani Zwane, said witnessing this youngster reach the provincial stages of the competition was a motivation for other learners in the school.

“Witnessing her represent the province for the second time is a historical moment as she is the only learner of this school to have ever qualified for the national tournament,” said Zwane.

He added that despite facing several challenges, including the lack of training equipment and limited practice time due to academic commitments, Nonhlekazi persevered.
