Walkers unite to fight against child abuse in KaBokweni

The Lowveld Walkers are on a mission to make a difference in the community.

About 1 000 Lowveld Walkers recently walked in solidarity against child abuse and child exploitation. The participants started at Tekwane South, moving to the airport road and back, with four distance options, 5km, 10km, 15km and 21km.

Various stakeholders came out to join and they all walked with one mission: fighting against what they call injustice against children.

Lowveld Walkers’ founder, Joseph Mashaba, said the route was easy and the walkers had the opportunity to make a statement on the local roads, while speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Mashaba said April is Child Protection Month, and the recent national shutdown and local cases made it important for them to raise awareness on this matter.

Issues discussed before the walk, included that parents should be present in their children’s lives; the importance of reporting any forms of abuse and not letting children be victims of aggression. “Children copy behaviour, so be an exemplary adult. Remember to listen, believe and love them.”

He wanted to encourage those who are interested in their events to join in. “Our activities are free and everyone is welcome. Once you join the walks, you will realise that it is a good way to stay fit and raise awareness while socialising with others,” he said.
