Young Masoyi man empowers youth with resources to boost academics

Inspired by his own struggles, a young man volunteers his time and resources to keep the youth focused on a brighter future.

A 22-year-old aspiring community builder has embarked on a journey to keep youngsters from a life on the streets by engaging them in extracurricular activities and offering educational support.

Through his non-profit organisation, Blaq Child Foundation, Bheki Tsotetsi offers a holistic approach to empowering the youth. This includes providing access to tutoring sessions to boost their academics, assisting underprivileged youngsters with dignity packs (including items to assist with every day personal hygiene) and mentorship programmes.

The organisation has also implemented life skills development initiatives, in which youngsters are encouraged to communicate effectively, with the belief that this will empower children to better address the challenges they face.

These programmes are run at community halls in areas close to Tsotetsi’s home in Chochocho.

He said that aside from the programmes available, the foundation also assists learners and students by providing access to internet data for research purposes.

The foundation was established by Tsotetsi after experiencing his share of a lack of academic support, with insufficient attention given to pupils at most no-fee schools.

“After completing matric in 2021, I took a transformative gap year, which gave me some time for deep reflection about my purpose. The challenges I faced during my school years had a profound impact on me, igniting a passionate commitment to ensuring that no child endures similar hardships. I strive to uplift the next generation, guiding them towards brighter futures and reminding them that the change they want begins within them,” he said.

Tsotetsi hopes to reach more communities and live out his dream of bringing about positive change for children, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources for their education and creating a lasting impact as a community builder.
