DJ injured in KaNyamazane tavern shooting

Out of concern for his friend the victim confronted the suspect, who suggested they step outside.

A 33-year-old man was arrested for attempted murder and the unlawful discharge of a firearm following a shooting incident at a tavern last Sunday. The suspect was expected to appear in the KaNyamazane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, said the case was not enrolled in court; however, further instructions were given to do so. “The suspect was released but the investigation is ongoing,” said Ndubane.

According to her, the incident occurred at around 05:30, when the victim, who had just finished a part-time DJ gig, noticed his intoxicated friend with an unknown man who was in possession of his friend’s belongings.

“Out of concern, he questioned the man, who suggested they step outside due to the loud music. Once outside, the man reportedly warned the DJ not to question him, stating that they did not know each other. The DJ explained that he was simply looking out for his friend and then attempted to contact his employer. While reaching for his phone, the man allegedly drew a firearm and cocked it. The suspect fired a shot before approaching the victim, then pointed the firearm at his head and fired a second shot. The bullet narrowly missed the victim’s head, grazing his left ear. The first shot is believed to have ricocheted off the ground and hit his left leg,” she said.

Ndubane added that the suspect fled the scene but was caught by members of the public who handed him over to the police. “The firearm used in the incident was recovered and was reportedly licensed,” she said.
