Long-serving Barberton correctional services commissioner retires
The former commissioner, Midjohn Mhlongo, was involved in various community services and upliftment during his term in the office.
After 36 years of dedicated service to the Department of Correctional Services, the area commissioner, Midjohn Mhlongo, retired in April.
During his career, Mhlongo made significant contributions to the department, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire and guide the work of the Barberton Management Area.
His passion for community upliftment was evident in his involvement in various outreach programmes and initiatives.
His commitment to innovative solutions led to notable achievements, such as the conversion of an old house next to the Barberton Town Youth Centre into the Barberton Community Corrections facility, and a successful maize project that enabled the department to produce mielie meal in-house, resulting in substantial cost savings.

One of Mhlongo’s most notable legacies is the construction of a sports facility at Mchaka Secondary School in Cunningmore A. This initiative demonstrates his dedication to empowering communities and promoting rehabilitation through education and sport.
Mhlongo expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the department, saying: “I’m humbled by the recognition and grateful for the opportunity to serve. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. I thank my family for their unwavering support, my colleagues for their camaraderie, and the communities we’ve served for their trust and co-operation.” With a sense of fulfilment, he looks forward to this new chapter in his life.

Following Mhlongo’s retirement, Noah Nkosi, the Nelspruit head of the centre, has been appointed to act as the Barberton Management Area’s commissioner for a period of three months.
“I am honoured to take on this new role and commit to building on the strong foundation laid by Mhlongo. Filling his shoes will be a challenge, but I am eager to continue his good work and ensure that the Barberton Management Area continues to thrive. I pledge to uphold the high standards of service and leadership he embodied, and I look forward to working with the community and stakeholders to drive progress and excellence in our area,” Nkosi said.
