Strong winds wreak havoc in Pienaar

The City of Mbombela's mayor has called for support for the affected families and schools.

Fifteen households and two schools were affected by the strong winds experienced in Pienaar on Monday night, June 9.

It has been reported that the roofs of Sicelosetfu Secondary School and Mbongeni Primary School were damaged.

This comes in a critical period as pupils are currently writing their mid-year exams.

Mpumalanga News approached the provincial Department of Education’s spokesperson, Gerald Sambo, with a enquiry that includes the measures to be taken to assist these schools and for the pupils to continue with their exams in a safe environment.

Sambo only acknowledged receipt of the query.

The City of Mbombela’s executive mayor, Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, said on her official Facebook page that various municipal officials have been allocated in the area to assess the damage caused by the winds.

“Officials are still gathering information about the situation on the ground. As the municipality, we will not be able to rebuild the houses but we can provide essentials such as gas stoves and foam mattresses. We will then take the information that we have gathered and give it to the Department of Co-Operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs and the Ehlanzeni District Municipality,” said Makushe-Mazibuko on the post.
