Amersfoort murder update: Wife and stepson in court, case postponed

Gruesome murder case to return to court amid fraud allegations.

The wife and stepson of Sydwell Sibisi, who was violently murdered on January 31, appeared in the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on June 17.

Sbongile Petunia Sibisi (47) and Ndumiso Romeo Mabona (23) face charges of murder, fraud and theft in connection with Sydwell’s killing.

The matter was postponed to Wednesday, June 18.

According to the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, Sydwell was travelling with a relative between Volksrust and Daggakraal when the vehicle they were in suffered a flat tyre, forcing them to stop on the roadside.

A white Toyota Fortuner allegedly pulled up, and its occupants handcuffed the two. Sydwell was then attacked with an axe and a panga.

Both weapons were found at the scene after the suspects had fled.

Ndubane confirmed that the murder was allegedly linked to an insurance fraud scheme.

“Police discovered that the suspects used the victim’s identity to register and cash out an insurance policy following his death,” she said.
