Major contraband seizure at Barberton prison during raid
A search operation at Barberton Maximum Correctional Centre led to a major seizure of illicit items.
A search and seizure operation at the Barberton Maximum Correctional Centre uncovered contraband among 329 offenders during a surprise raid on October 15.
Officials also searched the cells and discovered hidden items in 10 of them.
The search, led by acting area commissioner Noah Nkosi, resulted in the confiscation of a significant quantity of illegal items, including cell phones, chargers, headsets, SIM cards, scissors, sharp objects and cash.
“We expect every official to conduct themselves professionally and to adhere to the Department of Correctional Services’ (DCS) standard operating procedures. We won’t tolerate activities compromising the safety and security of our facility. This operation sends a clear message that we are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all,” he added.
DCS spokesperson Opheliah Motloutsi said the joint operation involved Barberton DCS’ emergency support team and first response team, as well as the SAPS.

According to security and facilities manager Thabang Nyakana, the operation aimed to ensure a secure environment for both officials and inmates.
“DCS has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence or abuse,” said Nyakana. “The operation was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the DCS and the SAPS in the fight against crime and corruption within correctional centres.”
Head of this maximum correctional centre, Jeffrey Malumane, commended the dedication and hard work of the officials involved in the operation. He said the Barberton Management Area remains committed to creating a safe and secure environment that supports rehabilitation and reintegration.
