Ehlanzeni learners awarded as Sanca Lowveld drug-fighting champs
The learners are part of an after school programme conducted by Sanca Lowveld with the aim to empower them with knowledge about drugs and substance abuse.
Learners of Mthombo Secondary School and Tekwane Primary School received certificates of recognition from the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) Lowveld.
The awards ceremonies were held at the schools on Thursday, October 30. The learners were recognised for completing the Children Against Drug Abuse as well as the Teenagers Against Drug Abuse programmes.
These initiatives focus on prevention and life skills, facilitated by Sanca Lowveld.

The association’s community builder, Sibusiso Mthembu, said the organisation aims to empower children and teenagers with knowledge, values, and practical tools to make positive lifestyle choices and resist peer pressure, particularly concerning substance abuse.
Mthembu said they are currently working with six schools in Mbombela and Bushbuckridge, which include primary and secondary schools.
“This is a year-long programme which is implemented in partnership with selected schools. We conduct monthly workshops, awareness campaigns, mentorship sessions and parent or teacher dialogues. We also focus more on substance abuse, self-awareness, peer influence, mental health, leadership, goal setting and making drug-free choices,” he added.
The organisation works with learners aged nine to 18 years.
Mthembu said this is an after-school programme and that it is important to include the parents, since parenting begins at home.
“The learners are much more aware of the dangers of substance abuse and they get supported in decision-making. It also enhanced parental involvement in prevention efforts, and most importantly, we aim to create youth ambassadors who advocate for a drug-free lifestyle in their schools and communities,” he added.
