The 3-in-1 race was aimed at promoting health, wellness and unity in the community.

Barberton Mines recently hosted its annual 3-in-1 race, drawing hundreds of employees, stakeholders and community members. The event, presented as a flagship initiative of the mine’s wellness campaign, aimed to promote health, unity and community engagement.

A company spokesperson, Soya Magida, said the race continues to demonstrate the mine’s commitment to employee health and community development.

“The well-being of our employees is crucial to the success of our operations. Today’s turnout reflects our shared dedication to personal wellness and the the event also highlighted a range of community support initiatives, including funeral cover, health services, bursaries, skills training, food donations and assistance with disaster relief.

Barberton Mines general manager, Mogotsi Mokgojwa, said the gathering also addressed the continued threat posed by illegal mining.

“Illegal mining endangers lives, degrades our environment and threatens the local economy. Organised crime has become a parallel economy. We must raise the cost of doing business for these syndicates. We are implementing measures to block unauthorised access and disrupt supply chains that support illegal operations,” Mokgojwa said.

Attendees were encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The mine said collaboration between community members and stakeholders is essential to protecting the region from the growing impact of illegal miners, settlers and poachers.

Magida invited stakeholders to strengthen collective efforts against criminal syndicates. “Together, through dialogue, enforcement and engagement we can ensure Barberton Mines continues to operate safely and contribute meaningfully to our communities.”

The company reiterated its focus on promoting health and tackling illegal mining across its operations and surrounding communities.

“By running, walking and cheering together, we strengthen the bonds that keep our communities and our mine secure,” said Magida.
