12-day running challenge in Mbombela promotes awareness of social issues

Local athletes took part in daily runs to raise awareness on social ills.

The fourth annual Bella’s Athletics Club 12×12 Challenge was a remarkable celebration of endurance and unity, and awareness of social ills.

The challenge consisted of 12 consecutive days of 12km runs, and a 6km option for those who preferred a shorter commitment.

The challenge was held from December 1 to 12, marked by impressive stars and a larger turnout than in previous years. The early morning energy and excitement set the tone for what would become 12 unforgettable days of running, reflection and camaraderie. Each day introduced a new route, taking participants through various streets in Mbombela.

Beyond the physical challenge, the heart of the 12×12 challenge focused on raising awareness of critical social issues such as HIV/Aids, road safety, substance abuse, cancer, mental health, and gender-based violence and femicide.

Runners were educated on prevention measures, encouraged to break down stigmas, and reminded of meaningful ways to support those living with illnesses.

A fun and impactful twist was introduced by encouraging participants to wear colours associated with each social cause, creating visibility and sparking conversations within the community.

A prize-giving ceremony took place at Ndalo Lodge on the last day of the challenge. Runners were awarded medals and participation gifts in recognition of their commitment and perseverance.
