Eskom issues important notice amid severe Lowveld weather conditions
Residents are warned not to touch electrical cables and to treat all Eskom infrastructure as live.
Eskom Mpumalanga is calling on all customers in the Lowveld region to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant following a series of severe weather alerts.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple alerts for severe weather over the past week, affecting various parts of Mpumalanga.
According to Eskom spokesperson Lazarus Muthimba, these adverse conditions, ranging from heavy rainfall to potential wind damage, pose a significant threat to the provincial power grid.
Muthimba warned that the severity of the weather could lead to power outages and structural damage.

“These conditions may have a direct impact on Eskom infrastructure, including power lines, substations, transformers and related equipment. As a result, there is an increased risk of damage, faults or compromised assets in the affected areas,” Muthimba said.
In light of these risks, Eskom has issued a strong reminder to both employees and the public to treat all electrical infrastructure as live at all times.

To ensure public safety, residents are urged never to approach or handle fallen power lines, exposed cables or suspected faulty transformers.
Any sparking, leaning poles or abnormal conditions should be reported immediately.
Under no circumstances should members of the public attempt to clear debris near power lines or fix electrical faults themselves.
“We are requesting all residents to remain cautious, keep a safe distance from any electrical infrastructure, and report any damage immediately through approved channels,” Muthimba added.
He reaffirmed that Eskom is monitoring the situation closely and is ready to deploy teams to safeguard both infrastructure and communities. “Eskom takes safety seriously and encourages the public to urgently report any incidents that may pose a danger.”
