Mpumalanga lecturer appointed as a member of National Heritage Council
A UMP lecturer has been appointed as member of a governing body overseen by the minister of sport, arts and culture.
An award winning culture and heritage lecturer at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), Dr Monicca Thulisile Bhuda, was appointed as a member of the National Heritage Council (NHC), effective from January 2026 until November 2027.
The NHC is a governing body appointed by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, to preserve, protect and promote South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage.

In this role, Bhuda will contribute to providing strategic direction and oversight to the council, supporting national efforts to protect and advance the country’s cultural and heritage resources.
During an interview with Mpumalanga News, Bhuda said she appreciates the appointment and is happy to see that her hard work is recognised by a national department. She said it distinguishes her as an expert.
“It shows that I am on the right path to preserve culture and heritage. To me it means that what I am doing in my career is appreciated by others.”
She added that it is proof to young people that a career in heritage is worthwhile.
“Most learners want to study other courses. Meanwhile, this career in heritage is not overpopulated.”
