Jimmy James Matshinga: A lifelong advocate for isiNdebele cultural pride
From Ikwekwezi FM to lecture halls, Jimmy James Matshiga championed isiNdebele with passion and pride - a cultural giant remembered.
The Mpumalanga MEC for culture, sport and recreation, Leah Mabuza, has paid tribute to an isiNdebele language activist, the late Jimmy James Matshiga.
Matshiga passed away in hospital on March 3 after a prolonged illness. He was a distinguished actor, educator and author.
Mabuza said his contribution to the preservation and advancement of isiNdebele stands as a remarkable testament to a life dedicated to language, heritage, and cultural pride.

“Beyond broadcasting, Matshiga served with distinction as a former isiNdebele language lecturer at the Ndebele College of Education, where he played a pivotal role in teacher development and language standardisation.”
His academic leadership strengthened linguistic scholarship and ensured that isiNdebele maintained its rightful place within formal education structures.

“We will always remember him for his powerful performances on Ikwekwezi FM. His portrayal of Gembe in the acclaimed radio drama Osemsamo limphosa emnyango and his ability to connect with the audience,” said Mabuza.
Matshiga will be laid to rest on Sunday, March 8, in KwaMhlanga.
