SAPS strengthens local response to human trafficking
The acting Mpumalanga police commissioner said there is an urgency of tackling human trafficking in the province.
In a significant step towards combating human trafficking, SAPS management convened a collaborative session at the provincial police headquarters on March 13.
The initiative stemmed from previous discussions during the provincial joint operational and intelligence structure meeting, which highlighted the pressing need for a cohesive response to human trafficking in the province.
Acting Mpumalanga police commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi emphasised the urgency of the issue, noting the importance of bringing together various stakeholders to foster collaboration and develop actionable solutions.

“It is disturbing to learn that some perpetrators see Mpumalanga as a gateway to carry out their illegal human trafficking activities,” said Mkhwanazi.
The engagement included discussions on the multi-dimensional challenges faced in combating human trafficking and strategies to strengthen the province’s response to this complex crime. Stakeholders shared concerns and experiences, shedding light on the factors that allow trafficking to persist.
One key resolution identified was the need for targeted training programmes. Participants agreed that a well-informed and equipped workforce is essential to effectively combat human trafficking and support victims.
“By joining forces, the SAPS and stakeholders are not only reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations, but also fostering a broader network of support, including community awareness and involvement,” he said.

The engagement served as a starting point for further collaboration. By establishing clear lines of communication, pooling resources, and sharing insights, SAPS and its partners are leading a comprehensive strategy tailored to the unique challenges of the province.
Mkhwanazi said the police force is ready and prepared to work in collaboration with its counterparts, setting a precedent for an integrated response to one of society’s most pressing challenges.
