A Mpumalanga institution hosts a delegation for a planned Malawian university

The planned institution will be named Mombera University, and the Malawi government visited Mpumalanga to learn various practices and gain insights.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) hosted a delegation from the Malawi government on March 20 as part of preparations to establish a new public institution, Mombera University in Malawi.

UMP has been identified as a leading reference institution, recognised for its successful planning, phased development and operationalisation of a modern higher learning institution on the African continent.

In welcoming the Malawi delegation, UMP vice chancellor Thenjiwe Meyiwa highlighted the need to enhance collaboration among universities in Africa.

“We regard ourselves as a pan-African institution, and it always gives us great pleasure to engage and share best practices with our peers across the continent,” said Meyiwa.

Speaking on behalf of the Malawian government, special assistant for economic affairs in the office of the second vice president, Foster Harawa, said: “As our country prepares to implement several major infrastructure initiatives, including the proposed Mombera University, UMP’s successful campus development offers valuable lessons and insights.”

The benchmarking visit included formal engagements, campus tours, and technical briefings that provided an overview of UMP’s development model and key infrastructure milestones.
