New Junior Council takes office in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality
The junior council serves to educate and promote children's rights and wellness.
New members of the Junior Council of the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM) were elected on Thursday, April 9.
Kgomotso Nyathi was elected as mayor, Rethabile Shubane as speaker, Nhlamulo Ndlovu as chief whip, Celebrate Shubane as municipal manager, and Keneiloe Khoza as support manager.
These learners from various schools across the BLM will advocate for and protect children’s rights during their one-year term.
On the day, a Children’s Dialogue was also hosted in the municipality’s council chamber.
BLM Executive Mayor Lydia Moroane said the dialogue formed part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to promoting child participation in governance, advancing children’s rights, and creating a platform for young people to engage meaningfully on issues affecting their development, education, and well-being.

These include learning conditions in classrooms, access to resources, and challenges affecting academic progress and the overall school experience, as well as social issues such as bullying, teenage pregnancy, and substance abuse.
“The engagement reaffirmed the BLM’s commitment to nurturing young leaders and addressing challenges affecting children, especially in the education sector. The platform also encouraged open dialogue, leadership development, and awareness of civic responsibility among learners,” Moroane said.
