Gun violence scourges as four are gunned down in Mkhuhlu

Four more cases of gun violence in the Mkhuhlu area have been reported since the second week of April.

Calcutta Police Station is located in Mkhuhlu, which has been nicknamed the ‘land of blood’ following more than 60 gun-related deaths over the past three years.

The most recent incident occurred in Oakley Trust, Makgona, on Sunday at around 07:00, when Mahlatsi Tavin Mathebula (31) was shot dead by unknown gunmen. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a case of murder is being investigated.

In the early hours of April 10, Priscilla Nkadimeng Chiloane (37), her 16-year-old son and her male friend (39) were ambushed by two armed assailants while driving between Sinyameni 2 and the former Hoxani College of Education in Mkhuhlu.

Chiloane was killed and her two companions were wounded in the shooting. The man was able to drive to Matikwane Hospital despite his injuries.
“We have opened a case of murder and two of attempted murder following the attack,” Masondo said.
