Bohlabela District among top most improved districts in the country
The matric pass rate rose to 83.5%, with a focus on data-driven teaching, stronger leadership, and targeted interventions to exceed the provincial benchmark.
According to the 2025 National Senior Certificate results, the Bohlabela District Department of Education is one of the most improved districts in the country. The district recorded a 4.9% increase, rising from 78.6% to a 83.5% pass rate.
On Monday, April 20, the district reviewed the first term results to sustain gains and unlock greater performance across all levels of learning. The review included examination results from all grades. Attention was given to the general education and training band, with presentations highlighting the importance of Grades Three to Six as a critical transition phase.

The chief director for further education and training, Elijah Nkosi, emphasised the urgency and purpose of these engagements, describing them as critical checkpoints that enable early intervention, strengthen accountability, and ensure that every learner remains on a path to success.
He further noted that learner performances must never be viewed in isolation, but as a reflection of the quality of teaching, support systems, and methodologies within the classroom.
“Where gaps exist, they must inspire innovation, adaptation, and renewed commitment not blame,” said Nkosi.
He added that professional conscientiousness remains the cornerstone of learner achievement, and called on educators to uphold discipline, consistency and purpose in every lesson, every day, supported by proactive and responsive school management.
The acting Bohlabela District director, Dr Khathu Khomola, highlighted the indispensable role of effective leadership, strengthened partnerships with School Governing Bodies, and the importance of replicating proven best practices – particularly in rural and deep-rural schools, where targeted educator development initiatives are already yielding encouraging results.
