Offenders reconnect with loved ones on Family Day in Mbombela

According to the Barberton Management Area's spokesperson, Opheliah Motloutsi, the family members who attended the event said they were grateful for the opportunity to see their loved ones.

Nelspruit and Town Correctional Centres hosted a Family Day on Sunday, May 10, opening the gates to the families and loved ones of offenders. According to the Barberton Management Area’s spokesperson, Opheliah Motloutsi, the aim of this day is to facilitate reconnection, reflection and hope.

“The event brought offenders, families and officials together in a structured setting to strengthen family unity, provide emotional support and encourage positive behavioural change. It also educated families on the rehabilitation process, highlighted their role in successful reintegration and created a safe, dignified space for meaningful interaction.”

Motloutsi said hosting family day on Mother’s Day gave the occasion a deeper meaning.

“For many mothers in attendance, it was a rare chance to be honoured by their children despite the circumstances, and for offenders it was an opportunity to express gratitude and seek forgiveness. The day reminded everyone that motherhood endures beyond prison walls, and that love and healing can begin in moments like these,” she explained.

One offender who participated in the programme, said: “I want to thank the centre for arranging this day. Seeing my family, especially on Mother’s Day, reminded me why I must change. This day gives me strength to stay on the right path. Without my family, I would feel lost.”

A family member who attended the event said, “I want to thank the department for rehabilitating our loved one. When he went inside, he was angry and distant. Today I see a different person who is now calmer, respectful and talking about the future. The department is doing good work and
we as a family will continue to support him.”

The acting area commissioner, Noah Nkosi, said that family is central to rehabilitation. “Corrections is not only about custody; but about restoring dignity and preparing individuals to return to society as better people. Family is the first community and when that bond is intact, the chances of successful reintegration increase significantly.”

He said the event is a key part of the Department of Correctional Services’ rehabilitation and reintegration programme. “Sustained family contact also reduces recidivism and improves offenders’ psychological well-being, with visits from children, spouses and parents serving as a strong motivator to comply with programmes and prepare for release.”
