UMP and SANParks commemorate International Day for Biological Diversity
The UMP and SANParks celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity by promoting conservation and sustainability.
The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and SANParks commemorated the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 21 under the theme “Biodiversity through different lenses,” encompassing science, society and stewardship. The event highlighted the importance of protecting biodiversity through collaboration between academic institutions, conservation agencies and communities.
It also formed part of the build-up to the centenary celebrations of the Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife conservation areas.

The celebration reflected the strengthening partnership between the two institutions in promoting biodiversity conservation, environmental research, student development, and sustainability initiatives.
Through this collaboration, students and researchers are provided with opportunities to contribute to conservation efforts while gaining practical experience in environmental sciences and sustainable development.

Representatives from both institutions emphasised the need for collective stewardship in addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. They reaffirmed their commitment to working together to strengthen conservation education, community engagement, and research that supports sustainable environmental management.
