Lowveld mourns former journalist Nothando ‘Mkhufe-khufe’ Shezi

Widely respected for her work as a Daily Sun journalist in the Lowveld, Nothando Shezi later served as a communications officer at Working on Fire and Sassa, where she remained a trusted link between the media and public institutions.

The Lowveld region is mourning the passing of former journalist and communications officer Nothando Shezi, affectionately known as Mkhufe-khufe, who died in hospital on Monday morning, June 1, following a short illness.

Shezi built a distinguished career in journalism, making her name as a reporter for the Daily Sun, where she covered the Lowveld region.

Through her dedication, professionalism and commitment to uncovering important stories, she became one of the most respected journalists in the area.

After years in journalism, Shezi joined Working on Fire as a communications officer based in Mbombela.

She later moved to the South African Social Security Agency, where she continued serving as a communications officer, working closely with the media and the public.

Her death has come as a shock to many in the media and communications sectors.

Colleagues remember her as a hardworking and passionate professional who made a significant impact through her reporting and community engagement.

Even after transitioning into communications, Shezi maintained strong relationships with journalists and media houses, helping to bridge the gap between institutions and the media.

Her approachable nature and willingness to assist earned her widespread respect among her peers.

A memorial service in her honour will be held in Mbombela on Thursday, June 4.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised, as the family continues to make the necessary preparations.
