Pienaar teen model chases big dreams beyond the runway
A Grade 10 leaner from Bonginhlanhla Secondary School is proving that determination and hard work can open doors.
Maya Mhlongo (15) is proving that determination, confidence and hard work can open doors to remarkable opportunities.
The Grade 10 learner of Bonginhlanhla Secondary School has quickly become one of the rising faces in local pageantry, collecting titles, ambassadorial roles and brand partnerships, while keeping her eyes firmly set on her education.

Maya’s modelling journey began in 2025 after she entered the Miss Ncakini pageant, a competition that sparked her passion for the industry and changed the direction of her life.
“I used to watch videos of models on TikTok and I admired the confidence they have because I am someone who loves being out there, meeting people and keeping myself busy while having fun. Pageantry allows me to do that,” she said.
In her debut year, Maya crowned Miss Ncakini 2025 first runner-up and earned other accolades, including most photogenic, social butterfly and public choice. She claimed the title of Miss Bonginhlanhla Secondary School first runner-up, cementing her reputation as one of the area’s promising young models.
Maya has expanded her portfolio by becoming ambassador for a local make-up brand, events and photography.
Each opportunity has helped her gain confidence and taught her the importance of professionalism and representing brands with pride. Although modelling has become a significant part of her life, she is committed to her education, and dreams of becoming a lawyer while continuing to build a successful career in the fashion and modelling industry.

“I want to become a lawyer and a successful model. I want to work with different brands and show young girls that it is possible to follow your dreams if you stay focused,” she said.
Maya believes that success comes with discipline and being willing to learn.
“I want people to know that age doesn’t determine what you can achieve, if you believe in yourself and work hard your dreams can become reality,” she said.
