Nkomazi maskandi artist Majawonke Dlamini takes Siswati music to Italy
Italian fans' admiration for his authentic Siswati maskandi music has landed Nkomazi artist Majawonke Dlamini an overseas performance.
A passion handed down from his father has launched Nkomazi maskandi artist Majawonke Dlamini (33) onto the global stage.
Born and raised in Nkomazi, Dlamini has been performing maskandi music since 2014, singing exclusively in Siswati and remaining committed to preserving Swati culture through traditional music. While many artists choose to perform in widely spoken languages to reach larger audiences, Dlamini says embracing Siswati has become one of his greatest strengths.
“Music runs in my family. My father inspired me with his passion for traditional music, and although he did not have the opportunity to record his own songs, his influence lives on through me,” he says.

Italian fans travel to Nkomazi
His authentic performances on social media recently caught the attention of music lovers from Italy. Inspired by his talent and eager to experience Swazi culture, a group of Italian fans travelled to Nkomazi to meet the artist in person. During their visit, Dlamini hosted the visitors at his home, where they recorded a live music session celebrating the beauty of Siswati music and Swazi cultural traditions. The experience strengthened international interest in his work and led to a major career milestone – an invitation to perform in Italy.
“I never imagined that singing in my mother tongue would open doors across the world. This proves that people connect with genuine culture and authentic music no matter where they come from,” he says.

Radio airplay fuels local success
Over the years, Dlamini has built a strong reputation within the South African music industry, and his songs have received airplay on Ligwalagwala FM and Nkomazi FM.
He is regularly booked to perform at festivals, community celebrations and cultural events across the region.
Musician prepares for overseas journey
The musician is preparing for the next chapter of his journey. He is currently arranging his passport and visa before travelling to Italy, where he will represent the rich heritage of Swazi culture on an international stage.
As he prepares to perform overseas, Dlamini hopes his story will inspire young artists to remain proud of their languages, traditions and identities.
“Your roots are your strength, and if you stay true to who you are, your talent can reach the world,” he says.
