Siyakhula Primary wins R20 000 in TRAC road safety contest

Prize money will rebuild a fire-damaged kitchen so learners can receive warm meals at school again.

A learner-led road safety committee took top honours in the TRAC Pedestrian Campaign 2026 with a creative drama skit, earning Siyakhula Primary School a R20 000 cash prize.

The school principal, Dudu Cele, explained how the win will benefit the school.

“Earlier this year, our school kitchen was destroyed by fire. Since then, we have been looking for sponsors to help us rebuild it, but without success,” she said. “When we heard about the TRAC Pedestrian Campaign 2026, we decided to enter with our schoolchildren, hoping that if we won the prize money we could use it to fix our kitchen.”

Cele added that, due to the win, learners can once again receive warm meals at school. She thanked TRAC and the dedicated teachers who led the learners.

“This win shows that when our community works together, we can overcome challenges,” she said.

TRAC congratulated the school, mentioning that Siyakhula Primary won because of its creativity, teamwork and the powerful road safety message that captured the adjudicators’ attention.
